Have been a fan for a long time but saw them live for the first time performing these songs and just blew me away. As a geologist with concern for the state of our environment and the damage humans are inflicting, I wholeheartedly approve these songs' messages
Favorite track: Devonian: Nascent.
Album absolutely blew me away, completely worth the wait. Pelagial has been my favorite of theirs for a while but this album is stunning. I love the thematic connection between Precambrian and Heliocentric this one brings, can't wait for the next half.
Favorite track: Permian: The Great Dying.
After 5 years of touring on Pelagial, THE OCEAN deliver their long-awaited 8th studio album, split into two volumes to be separately released in 2018 and 2020 respectively, titled Phanerozoic.
The Phanerozoic eon succeeded the Precambrian supereon, spanning a 500 million-year period leading to the present day. It has witnessed the evolution and diversification of plant and animal life on Earth, and the (partial) destruction of it during 5 mass extinction events.
Conceptually and musically, The Ocean’s Phanerozoic is the missing link between the albums Precambrian and Heliocentric / Anthropocentric.

Less sludge and more death metal, anchored in a progressive metal framework, with even more hilarious lyrics about slugs than ever before, what we have on Esoteric Malacology is Slugdge at the peak of their songwriting powers. Is this gimmicky? Sure it is, but much like Nekrogoblikon play amazing melodic death metal with a fixation on goblins and bears, Slugdge do the same here with an angrier, progressive death metal lens to express the joys as well as sorrows of the world of slugs. Heavy as hell, quite varied from song to song, and full of compelling riff craft and surprises, do not sleep on this one. Ippocalyptica

Masterpiece. The blending of styles and sounds and the creative songwriting make the surprising saxofone fit in completely natural. This is a so innovative in a genre that is defined by brutal vocals, heavy riffs and beats, together with high technical skills. I really enjoyed the video of the title track, even the reaction videos to it. Discovery of the year. As a reviewer said, you've got to go see them. pestorosso
